Lyrics: If you are learning Spanish, don't worry if you don't understand lyrics, many of the words are slang and some outdated slang. For example percanta or papusa would be hardly understood by young people here. They mean (attractive) woman. While the word chirusa, pejorative for woman, may still be heard. If you are searching one of the songs of the following list post a message to our group: Sitio Gaucho

Tango A century ago Buenos Aires was a rich city, men outnumbered woman, foreigners were a huge percentage. It was second only to New York by the number of immigrants arriving at the port. There were countless brothels and cabarets. 25 de Mayo street, near the port, had lots, Corrientes avenue, a street in those times, was also a hot spot. It is said that it started as a way to dance. Then it got its own music and later appeared the songs. So at the beginning it was a dance. A very provocative dance, with an insistent contact between dancers. It is unnecessary to mention that it was far from correct. Only prostitutes and men danced it. It was common to see men dancing together: women were so scarce, especially in tango dances. It was a creation of Buenos Aires, shared by Montevideo the capital on the other side of the river. The rest of the country remain distant, like Buenos Aires society. Lugones, a prominent writer from Cordoba, called tango: reptil de lupanar (brothel reptile). And the resemblance is well found when you see the twirls of tango dancers. Paris was not unusual as destination for Argentines since long before. In those times of richness we can guess that travelers to Paris would be numerous. The fact is that Paris adopted tango with enthusiasm. From Paris the tango conquered the reluctant Argentine society and spread out to the rest of Europe and America. Tango got lyrics after years of dancing. Lyrics were added also to many existing tangos, the era of tango song had began. The king of these songs was undoubtedly Carlos Gardel.
Tango lyrics are a compilation of Buenos Aires conventional wisdom. There we find many of the sayings and phrases usually heard in our city. Some of the lyrics sound funny today, deception with people are commonplace. We must remember than they were written by people over their forties, and usually after a life of partying. In some cases they are deep and sharp as it is the case of Cambalache, by Enrique Santos Discepolo. All Discepolo's lyrics are 'song philosophy', I never saw described with so few words how the life crushes illusion and dreams.
Tango shows and concerts The options available are: dance performers, concerts, dance clubs or academies You will always find dance performers in shows targeting tourists. They can be compared to classic ballet, where professional dancers show their ability. Music performance has usually lower quality. They are the most expensive option, in many cases dinner is served during the show. You won't find residents there because we consider them something like a curiosity not worth of too much attention and the price asked for them. Yes, at these shows we are also tourists who have already seen that show before. If you can afford them, shows are interesting. They usually have an important number of professional dancers dressing as it was usual in the golden time of tango. Concerts are cheaper and have better music. Buenos Aires is a good place for music lovers. There are all types of concerts, also opera and ballet. It is not unusual for a symphonic orchestra to include tangos in the repertoire.
